Planning a family photoshoot and not sure what to wear? You’re not alone — it’s one of the most common questions I get.
The good news is you don’t need to overthink it. With a few simple tips, you can create a look that feels natural, comfortable, and looks beautiful in photos
Stick to Neutral & Soft Colours
Soft, neutral tones always photograph best. Think:
beige
cream
white
brown
These colours keep the focus on you and your family, rather than distracting from the moment.
Coordinate — Don’t Match
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same outfit, aim for colours that complement each other.
For example:
Mum in beige
Dad in white & brown
Kids in cream
This creates a natural, relaxed look without feeling too “staged”.
Dress for the Season (UK weather 😅)
In the UK, the weather can be unpredictable — so layering is your best friend.
Autumn: cosy knits, boots, warm tones
Spring: light layers, soft colours
Summer: breathable fabrics
Winter: coats, scarves, textures
Layers also add depth and interest to your photos.
Keep It Comfortable
If you feel uncomfortable, it will show in your photos.
Choose outfits that:
fit well
allow movement
feel like you
This helps create natural, relaxed images.
🚫 Avoid These Common Mistakes
Try to avoid:
large logos
busy patterns
neon colours
clashing outfits
These can distract from the connection between you and your family.
Think About the Location
Your outfit should suit the setting:
Outdoor shoots → natural tones
Studio shoots → clean, simple looks
If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help you plan your outfits before your session.
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident. When you do, it shows in every photo.
Family photoshoots are about capturing real moments — laughter, connection, and those little in-between memories.
To make things even easier, I have a large client wardrobe with over 500 items available, including beautiful dresses for mums and outfits for newborns, children, and dads. This means you don’t have to worry about finding the perfect outfit — everything is ready for you.
If you’re thinking about booking a family photoshoot in West Yorkshire, I’d love to help you create something special.
